Hear This: Shapes and Sizes
Shapes and Sizes (Ashmatic Kitty)
REVIEW BY Christine Davidson
“Girl, you shouldn’t have watched him drown, the way his hands waved without a sound,” sings Rory Seydel on the closing track on Shapes and Sizes’ self-titled debut. Similarly sinister lyrics accompanying vibrant arrangements make this Victoria band full of pleasant surprises. The album brings listeners a mix of melodic pop and gritty rock and roll that echoes the Fiery Furnaces. The group’s vocals—particularly those of Caila Thompson-Hannant—are brilliant and give the music a depth that is hard to come by with most novice bands. These tunes will stick in your head for days—and that’s not a bad thing.
