After 20 years in the indie music scene, Vancouver rock duo David Lester and Jean Smith of Mecca Normal release their 13th CD, The Observer, this April. In this new work, Lester and Smith stay true to their simple mix of electric guitar and voice, but let go of their past adolescent sound to create graceful music that shows the artists’ true ability. The Observer touches on themes like romance and insecurity, and even reveals Smith’s strange ventures in internet dating in the 12-minute track “Fallen Skier.” The Observer proves that Mecca Normal once again sets the standard in the Canadian punk rock scene.
